CT users have asked: "I've already got the Guidebook 7th Edition Revised and my budget is tight; do I really need the 8th Edition?" The answer is probably different for different users.
The 8th Edition 2011 was rewritten cover to cover and we corrected many instances where the book did not match the Trail or other realities. There are many improvements in the new book; the 8th Edition is more user friendly. You'll see a more detailed description of 8th Edition improvements made on the CT Store page for the 8th Edition. The 8th Edition describes the current Trail route where the trail has recently been rerouted, the biggest change being at the Twin Lakes Dam in Segment 11, but also in other places where lesser reroutes have been constructed including in Segments 10 and 11.
The 7th Edition Revised 2008 still has value, though, and we think some users will find it acceptable. Guide7R ("R" for Revised) describes most of the Trail route as it currently exists. Only small portions of the CT have been rerouted since Guide7R was written. See the paragraph above.
Worth mentioning is the 7th Edition (not Revised) 2006. The CTF does not recommend the use of this book because large portions of the CT have been rerouted after the 7th Edition was written. One example of a major change in the Trail was a 17 mile reroute in Segments 23 and 24 atop Cataract Ridge. The 7th Edition does not describe this route.
